Green Week was a project that I led as part of a club I was involved in during high school. I was a lead team member of FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America). My group and I were competing in the "Focus on Children" category. We decided to start up a recycling program in one of our local elementary schools that had not previously been recycling. We spent days and weeks prepping and planning "Green Week." We planned activities using recycled materials, schedules meetings with school staff and administration, and designed rewards as motivation. During Green Week we pushed into K-4 classrooms to lead different activities to teach students about recycling. All the while, students were bringing in tons of recycled materials from their homes. At the end of the week, as a reward to the school, my team and I used a portion of the recycled materials and constructed a life size igloo in the entryway of the school. We recycled the remaining collection and I am proud to say that this initiative has continued to this day. |
